He was recommended to students and aspiring artists by the Transvaal Adult Education Department for lessons covering silk-screening, pastels, water-colours, charcoal and oils – the latter being his preferred choice. His in-depth portrayals of the rural South African people, with subtle reference to western influence, are colourful and alive with excellent use of the bright African sunlight and its deep shadows to depict the contrasts of the continent.Working out of Richards Bay for the past twenty-two years he returned to Gauteng in 2008. He has produced a video/DVD drawing course for both children and adult education that has been approved by the Education Department and is being widely in Natal, utilised both as an aid to educators (especially at rural schools) and private individuals.Locally (KZN), Gerard has been commissioned for dedicated works, including a portrait of Dr Ben Ngubane (whilst Premier of KZN), culture/development related works for the Uthungulu Council Chambers and specific works for both businesses and personal décor. Gerard is proud that one of his works graces the collection of Mr. Nelson Mandela.
